Happy Holidays!                                                        12/30/09

I hope everyone has had a great holiday season and I'll talk to you all in the new year.

Winter Wildlife                                                         12/17/09

The sun has returned for a few days so I've been out collecting as many shots as I can before the next big rain event arrives tomorrow morning. The animals, birds and fish are now fully in their winter patterns. The marshes have turned to their winter hues, and the mornings have a chill to them which sometimes reminds me of the thirty real winters I enjoyed (but don't miss).

Our mellow Lowcountry winter brings many raptors to the area including Bald Eagles, Cooper's Hawks, Sharp-Shinned Hawks and Red-Shouldered Hawks including this immature bird that was drying off after a long night of downpours.

I have also been working on some fishing photography lately so here are a few redfish shots, followed by some other random shots I picked up this week.

More Rain and Clouds                                              12/12/09

The weather is still not cooperating so I spent many more hours staring at my computer screen going through folder after folder of raw files editing a few shots here and there. Here's a couple of fun ones I found while searching.

Sunset-Sunrise                                                          12/11/09

The sun finally came out at the end of the week, and I was able to get some shooting done at sunset on Thursday and Sunrise on Friday. Thursday evening I was shooting a few properties at Cassique Golf Course on Kiawah Island and was able to get out to the marsh and golf course right at sunset with some good results.

This morning I couldn't help but notice the clouds lighting up just before sunrise, so I raced to a spot on Charleston Harbor and got some shots of Downtown and the sunrise. It was 39 degrees and blowing about 25 out of the North, but it was worth it for a quick shoot.

Rainy Days                                                               12/10/09

Another week with on and off rain and more overcast days than sunny ones, what's a photographer to do? Luckily, there was plenty to do. My mother (author Jane Yolen) was in town so we spent many hours discussing book projects we are currently working on and coming up with concepts for new books. Some of the new ideas will eventually morph into other things or just disappear all together, but some may actually make it to print some day.

So after discussions I spent some time at the computer going through thousands of files gathering and editing images for these and other projects. You never know what you'll find in the archives and it's fun picking through raw images and finding value in shots you had ignored months or years earlier. Here are a few fun ones I found while digging around:

Catching Up                                                               12/3/09

After a few days off over the holiday without the camera, it was time to get out and do some shooting. I knew the weather would turn bad in the middle of the week, so I needed to get a jump on it while the sun was shining. I had a sizeable list of properties to shoot for Kiawah Island Real Estate, so that would dominate my schedule, but there was some time to get some wildlife during and in between shoots.

I did manage to get a photograph of a new bird species. This isn't very common for me these days, as I've shot upwards of 140 species in the Lowcountry. On my way to shoot a property in the Cassique neighborhood at Kiawah Island I spotted a Red-Headed Woodpecker working on a tall dead tree. I've seen him in this area before but was never able to get a shot of him. On this day he was nice enough to pose for a couple of shots.

Later I found a Pileated Woodpecker poking around the same tree.
